That is really rather unfair to the British. The Durand line did nothing to divide the Pathans for the simple reason that they never respected the border anyway. Furthermore the Pathans were always divided by their local feuds. Finally as the Pathans were habitual raiders into lowland territories, the British had no choice but to be there and the Pathans to some degree asked for it.
