Wedding Plans

My beloved is mine, and I am his...

Song of Solomon 2:16

My second daughter is getting married this spring! She is marrying a fine Christian man who is currently on active duty in Afghanistan. She got engaged over a Skype call. The sparkling diamond ring was hidden unknown to her. She was simply asked to go on a scavenger hunt for certain items placed strategically in the house. The final lead brought her to the ring’s location. For the females reading this account we are enthralled by the romance. The guys are probably thinking, “How did he pull that off?”

Despite the convoluted process, this is a true story. She was called and is now engaged to her lover. The covenant process has begun, the marriage feast is being prepared and we are waiting for official orders to bring him back to the states.

There is much to plan, but when she is tempted to become Bride-zilla, she receives an email from her love helping her to gain perspective. I watch how the burden disintegrates, she smiles, and joy is restored knowing this is about the two of them, not the color of the bridesmaid’s shoes.

So, too, is our relationship with our Lord; the Lover of our soul. We become engaged in a long distance covenant; enabled, in a way, to see His face and hear His words. We agree to a life forever dependent on His lead, even though we realize that “IEDs” (improvised explosive devices) will be strewn in our path all the journey long. We continue to prepare for the feast, focused on the day of His return.

When we tend to lose focus of the goalthat great day when we will see Him face to face – we become the Bride-zilla of Christ. God forgive us. Lead us to the right dress and the perfect reception hall so that our guests will enter into the joy of salvation, freed from distractions. May they learn, maybe for the first time, about covenant beauty. Renew the vows for those of us who may be hibernating spiritually.

In the warmth of this spring we will celebrate more than a family wedding. We celebrate our oneness with Christ. As my baby girl takes that last dance with her Papa, my tears will be of joy because this great mystery of Christ – the Father giving us a marriage covenant – has once again been revealed in sending His Son into our lives to become one. May we be His faithful Beloved.

  1. As a man who is engaged to be married, I really enjoyed reading this article. My proposal was unique, but not quite as impressive. I hope the rest of their plans go smoothly, as I am learning the dense process of scheduling locations, the church, flowers, and perhaps even brides maid's shoes.
