Noted astronomer Carl Sagan espoused the theory that the universe and all life within it evolved due to natural causes. He believed that there was no real difference between animals or humans and therefore opposed animal research. However, when Sagan was faced with a life-threatening disease he chose to undergo a medical procedure that was only made possible by animal research- which proved that his atheistic world view was untenable.
