It’s been almost 86 years since Zelmyra and Herbert Fisher walked down the isle, and they say they’d do it again too.

The North Carolina couple, both over a century old, have been best friends since childhood. They’ve loved each other and the Lord their whole lives, and have some good advice for young men and women getting married today:

“Divorce was never an option -- or even a thought,” they say. “...God has put the two of you together on the same team to win. Marriage is a commitment to the Lord.”

How many broken hearts and homes could we avoid if we just took this simple advice? The Fishers got it right when they based their marriage on a commitment rather than a feeling. There is a beauty to this story that only life-long married love offers.

Chuck Colsona and I talked about that beauty with Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse on BreakPoint this week. If you missed this terrific interview with one of the most articulate defenders of marriage today, you can still hear it at breakpoint.org. For the Point, I’m John Stonestreet.
