Last week my oldest daughter Abigail, who has an acute eye for injustice in the world was very disturbed about the plans of our friends to sell their kittens. As a six-year-old who recently learned about slavery in American history, she fought back tears as she proclaimed, “That’s just like slavery because cats are people too.”

Wisely, my wife used the opportunity to talk with Abigail about what makes humans valuable -- and distinct from animals. We’re made in the image of God; animals are not.

The episode over interracial marriage from that small Kentucky church is also an opportunity for the church to communicate the dignity of all people regardless of race because they are made in the image and likeness of God. So, please talk with your kids, your church, and the culture.

We can’t get this one wrong. The inherent dignity of all people is central to a Christian worldview, central to our witness in the world, and central for a healthy culture. For thePointRadio.org, I’m John Stonestreet.

Jason,

Good point... that's why we have a dog!
Actually, cats think we are their slaves.
